Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] September 11th 2001 marked the start of a new chapter in world history. From that moment on, the "Islamic matrix" terrorism has become one of the phenomena that most marked the international scenario, leaving a trail of blood along its course that seems to go beyond logic and reason. But what are the historical roots that have fueled the birth of the different jihadist formations and which paths have marked their evolution in these years? So is meant by jihadism and what relations does it have with the concept of jihad? What distinguishes al-Qa'ida from the self-styled "Islamic State" and how did it become a leading player in the Middle Eastern and global context? Who are the foreign fighters who left to fight in Syria and Iraq? What are the challenges brought by jihadist groups to Tunisia, Libya and Egypt? How is the threat posed by the mujaheddin read by our security agencies and how can they face it in distant and complex theaters?
