Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The Florentine man of letters Giovan Battista Strozzi the Younger (1551-1634) enjoyed remarkable fame and high regard among his contemporaries, who - rulers and pontiffs, men of the Church and those in power - esteemed his uncommon intellectual and literary qualities. His long biographical parable took him from the Medici court and the school of Pier Vettori to the glories of Barberini's Rome, passing through the Capitoline cenacles of the Aldobrandini, the Orsini, the Humorists, as well as through the Milan of Federico Borromeo. The study of the dense epistolary network of which he was at the center demonstrates that the Younger was thus able to establish relationships with the greatest exponents of the res publica litterarum in the period between the late Renaissance and Baroque, from Bargeo to Chiabrera, from Lionardo Salviati to Fulvio Testi, from Antonio Querenghi to Stigliani, from Guarini and Tasso to Marino and Galileo, who turned to him certain of receiving authoritative opinions on the subject of vernacular writing. Through the scrutiny and analysis of unpublished and rare documents, the volume intends to offer a monographic study that allows us to clearly outline the author's biography and the leading role he held within the literary academies of his hometown; take stock of his huge production in verse, mostly manuscript and never reached the press, as well as - through the exegesis of the prose - highlight the non-secondary contribution that he made to the poetic debates that animated the Italian intellectual circles in those decades; thus retracing, behind his escort, a significant stretch of our cultural and literary history
