Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume reconstructs in detail the pastoral activity of don Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, illustrating the various tasks he performed during the war: spiritual assistant in the city's military hospitals; animator of the Soldier's Mass in the church of Santo Spirito; organizer of the consecration to the Sacred Heart of the City Presidium troops; finally, in recent months, religious and moral leader of the great military hospital housed in the new Ricovero, where Italian prisoners were released, released from Austria, because they are tubercular or seriously ill. The research reveals some little known but very relevant aspects of Roncalli's thought: his patriotism, the vision of war, the sense of consecration of soldiers to the Sacred Heart, attention to historical dynamics. The volume also offers a large documentary section that includes sources of various kinds, many of which are unpublished oppoure by now unobtainable: schemes of homilies, traces of speeches, articles in newspapers and magazines, passages from diaries, memories, obituaries, letters to different correspondents and photographs.
