Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] After years of difficult take-off, the sociology of health has established itself in our country as a specific discipline with wide recognition and able to guide the action of health professionals. This manual - intended for nurses who already work in public and private care settings and nurses in training in basic degree courses and post-basic courses - represents an introductory text to the sociology of health which, through an interdisciplinary approach, a polycentric gaze and a popular approach, deals with the main issues concerning the relationship between health and society. In the first part we analyze the crucial nodes of the sociology of health and disease, such as the relationship between theory, empiria, usability; the sociological paradigms of health; the body; the doctor-patient relationship; health inequalities; the promotion of well-being; the relationship between immigration and health; health systems in advanced countries. In the second part we discuss some issues that closely concern the nursing profession, such as the inter-professional relationship with doctors and other health professions; the legislative changes that have involved nurses especially in the last 20 years; communication with the patient; intercultural training courses; the role of the nurse in community assistance and the family in an extended sense, nursing care in situations of vulnerability and marginalization. In conclusion, some reflections are made regarding the scenarios of change and the future development prospects for the nursing profession.
