Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] "Do you speak Arabic?" The manner of speaking illustrates the aura of proverbial difficulty that surrounds this language better than many speeches. But what are its features? Is it really that hard? Is it true that there is a big difference between written and spoken form? And what is the relationship between Arabic and Islam? The volume aims to answer these and other questions, highlighting the living link between the Arabic language and the civilization that expressed itself in it and continues to express itself. The Semitic languages and their main common traits, the pre-Islamic Arabic and the language of the Koran, the development of linguistic reflection, the contact with modernity, dialects and their complex relationship with the classic, but also dictionaries and calligraphy, are some of the topics addressed in this volume. This second edition, extended by more than 40% compared to the first, is aimed at those who, having already started studying Arabic, wish to have a clearer view of the status and functioning of this language.
