Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The history of abstract art in the avant-garde period was essentially a male history. The few women involved were largely linked, as wives, companions or daughters, to the male artists and despite their great commitment in private, they were only rarely valorised in public events or, even in the rare cases in which they found recognition, they did not manage to pass the scrutiny of history. We had to wait until the Seventies to finally see women's work recognised, although often within exhibitions not specifically dedicated to abstraction because they were oriented more towards feminist themes. This volume was born as a survey of abstract art created by Italian artists and follows the exhibition held in Como in 2022 entitled Astratte. Women and abstraction in Italy 1930-2000 which, without in any way wanting to be exhaustive, addressed with a transversal reading the ways in which art communicated with an abstract language starting from the historical research of the 1930s.
