Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Published posthumously and unfinished in 1969 with the curatorship of Vito Camerano and Italo Calvino, Le città del mondo is the story of a journey, an inevitable journey towards a mysterious and unknown horizon, different for each of the protagonists. In a timeless Sicily, shepherds, puppeteers, newlyweds, young fugitives and prostitutes move, portrayed on an endless pilgrimage through the cities of the island, "the cities of the world", each one anxiously searching for something. Cities only dreamed of by the characters of the novel, created under the pressure of their desires and their aspirations for happiness, recalled in their imaginary speeches but always observed from afar. A Vittorini engaged in the restructuring of the very concept of novel and literature, who identifies the city as a universal idea of mankind, giving life to one of his best works. From this book Vittorini will also draw a script, which in 1975 will become a film directed by Nelo Risi.
