Abstract

The introduction shows how Ernesto Grassi’s education was based on the study of Italian Humanism and oriented towards philosophical research of the most relevant topics of his time. This is the reason why the works included in this book are significant: they were written and published between 1922 and 1946, and they show Grassi’s relationship with the masters of Italian philosophy and European culture. There is also evidence of his deep ongoing dialogue with the most significant authors of humanism and modern age, together with his direct relationship with the most important philosophers of his time: Chiocchetti, Martinetti, Croce, Blondel, Husserl, Heidegger and Guardini among others. Grassi also carried out intense editorial work, planning many collections and series with several editors. Moreover, these works anticipate three main central themes that the philosopher will study in his future researches: first of all, Heidegger’s reinterpretation of metaphysics, which Grassi will read as rehabilitation of the Latin culture and of humanism. Under this respect, poetry has a central role, as language is the means by which it is possible to express the difference between Sein and Seiende. The second relevant theme is the study of metaphors, both in their content and as an expression of the human being and of anything beyond appearance. The third theme is the study of language as a means to express transcendence, with a philosophical approach to those fields of reality that can be expressed through metaphors. The volume collects all the early production of Grassi, both in Italian and in German. An Italian translation of the German writings is included as well.
