Abstract

Language dynamics gives a special place to emerging terminologies, whose role is to constantly update the way in which speakers of a language communicate about new knowledge. Emerging terminologies are thus the linguistic reflection of the emergence of new fields of knowledge, their development and their dissemination to the public, who are not necessarily aware of the dynamics that characterise them. There are, however, situations in which new fields of expertise become more visible and their terminologies more easily disseminated: these include artificial intelligence, mobile telephony, cryptocurrencies, sustainability, social networks, green energy and smart business, to name but a few. From a linguistic perspective, it may be surprising to see the richness and variety of emerging terminologies in many types of texts, from press releases to articles, from conferences to scientific works: these terminologies are formed in specialised languages and penetrate the language, becoming an integral part of the everyday lexicon. Issue 1/2024 of the "Studia Universitatis Babeș-Bolyai, Series Philologia" is dedicated to this theme - Emerging Terminologies and Specialised Translation - focusing on the analysis and description of emerging terminologies in different languages, with special attention to Romance languages. This thematic issue illustrates pluralistic approaches that integrate terminological neology, specialised phraseology, lexical relations and the cognitive-social dimension of terminology, terminological metaphor, and presents twelve articles, most of which are single-author contributions, with a European approach to current terminological research. The topics covered are very diverse, covering areas such as gastronomy, fashion, ethics, nanoscience, green energy, blockchain, Covid-19, politics, law and marine life: this thematic diversity illustrates the many fields in which new terminology is recorded.
