Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The second half of the nineties saw the definitive 'explosion' of the Internet. The phenomenon appears to be characterized by an unprecedented complexity: the Internet is not only a medium in the traditional sense, but also and above all a virtual space of communication and meeting, of expression, of symbolic and economic exchanges. The sudden development of the new medium poses multiple questions to scientific and humanistic disciplines. Above all, an ethical concern prevails in the most attentive observers: what old and new responsibilities are called into question by the Internet? What forms of citizenship, what rights, which economic models appear to be the most appropriate? And finally, what development opportunities does the Internet create, given that its widespread distribution in industrialized countries contrasts with its scarce availability in the southern hemisphere? The attention of the Church - even in the explicit invitation of John Paul II to courageously "cross" this new cultural "threshold - has immediately turned to the Internet with interpretative prudence and together with an active and participatory proposal, considering it as a resource at the service of the human community rather than as a simple channel of communication. Given these assumptions, this volume intends on the one hand to take stock of the roots and opportunities of the Internet, making use of multidisciplinary scientific contributions, and on the other to review the presence of ecclesial realities on the network, indicating some prospects for development.
