Abstract

In this paper cinematography is proposed as lens to read the social change related to the urban transformations. The city and the cinema are here seen as intertwined leading actors of the modernization process. At the same time charming and distubing the city is told by the cinema. But, doing this, the cinema also contribuites to create a certain idea of city and metropolis. The aim of this paper is to draw the strenght relationship between cinema and urban and social change, exploring in which way movies present and re-tell the typical urban fears and values of the modernization and globalization eras and their linked urban transformations. Several movies are here cited also to introduce issues as the escape from the city refuging in gated communities and suburbs.
