Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The last encyclical of Pius XI, Ingravescentibus malis (dedicated to the Holy Rosary and published on September 29, 1937), represents an emblematic example of the Magisterium on totalitarianism. In it the pontiff, while using a deliberately allusive language, in denouncing the "increasingly serious evils of our time" refers to National Socialism no less than to Bolshevism and Freemasonry, with a look that ideally extends from Mexico to the Union Soviet, including Germany and Spain torn by civil war.
