Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The chapter addresses the relationship between children, teenagers, adolescents and digital media with the aim of illustrating the specificities linked to the particular characteristics of age and social position; at the same time, it intends to highlight the network of discourses and adult social practices that greatly influence experience online created daily by younger people as much as the approach of human and social sciences to this object of study. After a brief introduction to the theme, we reflect on the institution of childhood as a public deity media and on the different strategies with which they have traditionally consulted him, up to the novelty represented by their digitalisation and the advent of the internet. Subsequently it is shown how in relation to new digital media yes the same attitudes that have characterized, in the past, are reproduced the action of adults with respect to the relationship between childhood and media, always in the balance between fears, educational demands and expectations of emancipation. So they come proposed the main approaches that guided the study of this relationship: the balance between risks and opportunities and the different focused perspectives on digital skills, digital well-being and children's rights in digital environments. Finally, we take a look at the main areas of socialization within which children, children and adolescents experience the media – family, school and peer group – to highlight some themes of emerging research and the contradictions that often accompany them.
