Abstract

Media cannot be considered mere communication tools or aids. Rather they pose as complex and integrated devices, capable of synthesizing multiple levels of meaning, always intertwining at least three key levels: - the reproduction of aspects of reality; - the representation of a gaze perspective; - the ability to synthesize structural complexity and communicative immediacy. In a nutshell, each media and media context always activates a threefold cognitive dimension: window on the real with which you interact; mirror of one's actions and personal and psychological dimension; mirror of the social and cultural context in which you live. References to the screen as a window and mirror no longer concern only the visual media, but tend to materialize in every cognitive and communicative act of our contemporaneity, which from the screens of cinema and television has gradually repositioned towards computers until translating into ordinary management of mobile devices, from smartphones to tablets.
