Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] It is still difficult to establish which "Promessi Sposi" have come into the hands of German readers. In the face of many editions, it is difficult to draw up a map of the original translations. The case of Eduard von Bülow (1803-1853) is symptomatic. He has twice translated the Manzoni novel. The first, already in 1827, simultaneously with the one promoted by Goethe and entrusted to Daniel Lessmann; the second, which dates back to 1837, has been appreciated for its loyalty and completeness, and has been proposed many times up to the present day, both in its complete form and in remakes. The case analyzed demonstrates how the translation signed by the prolific writer and journalist Otto von Schaching (pseudonym of Otto Denk, 1853-1918), who had various editions up to the present day, is actually a plagiarism. The essay, after outlining a picture of the translation story and offering a track for a hoped for systematization of the data, goes on to analyze Schaching's translation and linguistic competences, as well as to compare some of his pages with those of Bülow. It is also documented as the long story of the Bavarian writer "Die Pestsalbe. Eine Florentiner Geschichte aus dem 16. Jahrhundert" ("The pestiferous ointment. A 16th century Florentine history"), dated 1896, is largely inspired by the Manzoni novel.
