Abstract

The essay reinterprets, in a critical key, the artistic production linked to the political-religious image of the bishop of Brescia, Berardo Maggi (1275-1308), and shows the iconographic program relating to the episcopal figure, in a wide territorial framework connected to municipal Italy, to the Papacy, in Rome and to the Angevin court. Specifically, the analysis focuses on the sarcophagus, now at the entrance to the Old Cathedral, on the "political" fresco of the Town Hall in the Broletto and on the statue of the fountain in the convent of San Barnaba, currently in the city Museum of Santa Giulia. On the basis of the historical-artistic results, the essay tackles- thanks to the new archival-documentary acquisitions and the material sources on the city’s monumental transformations of the nineteenth-twentieth century - the story of the various works over the centuries, their acquisition in museums, the transformations, the recovery of individual parts for the creation of new liturgical furnishings, in style (such as the main altar of the Rotonda di Brescia) and the recomposition “ad pristinum” of lost sculptural portions. Similar operations reveal how urban-architectural planning and the conservation of the monumental historical-artistic heritage in the post-unification age transform the city and its major monuments into an original story in a museographic key.
