Abstract

Imago librorum addresses the question of the many forms that books have taken over a long period of time (from the late Middle Ages to the present day) and across a vast geographical area (corresponding to Western Europe). It is an issue of great relevance particularly in the current scenario, in the midst of the debate over the survival of the traditional book in terms of conservation, production and usability. A selected group of authoritative, internationally renowned scholars tackled this issue in an effort to provide answers. The result is an extremely rich collection of different perspectives comprising around twenty essays, in Italian and English, often accompanied by insightful illustrations, offering an essential reference for a serious reflection on the pastbut also the future of books. The Imago librorum project stems from the fruitful synergy between a number of institutions active in the vast universe of books based in the Trentino region (the local Soprintendenza, the Civic Library of Rovereto and the Municipal Library of Trento) and the CRELEB Center of Università Cattolica di Milano
