Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Dalmine, a Bergamo steel company specializing in the production of seamless pipes, since the fascist era has created a real company town: houses, schools, recreational facilities, food outlets but also mutual funds, pension funds and a vast set of other interventions characterize a "total factory". The volume analyzes the evolution of this complex set of social works in the face of the profound economic and social changes that occurred after the Second World War. Developments in the welfare state and the progressive affirmation of the consumer society call into question consolidated forms of assistance and ask for a profound rethink. The evolution of these phenomena, however, is less linear than it might appear at first glance: even in a public company such as Dalmine strong resistance can arise to prevent the internal mutual insurance from being absorbed by INAM as required by law. The rethinking of Dalmine corporate welfare is also linked to the radical upheavals that occurred in the framework of industrial relations in the transition from the regime to the Republic and then again with the cold war and the hot autumn. Many welfare structures that arose as unilateral company concessions are progressively contracted. In other cases, mediation proves impossible and corporate welfare, created to pacify the workforce, becomes a reason for conflict. The corporate social works, long presented by historiography through the key to understanding paternalism, emerge from this reconstruction as a delicate and changing relationship, in which the numerous actors in the field are called upon daily to measure themselves with environmental changes and, above all , with the strategies, guidelines and objectives of the counterparties so as to seek the terms of a possible balance of interests.
