Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The article, after a review of the most up-to-date information on the quantitative dimensions of the volunteering phenomenon in Italy, opens up to an international reflection, focusing on the role that volunteering can take in the processes of European integration. In particular, the role that the European institutions attribute in their official documents to the volunteering itself is highlighted, whose importance is emphasized both for the recipients of the activities promoted and for those who implement them, that is the volunteers. In light of this, the decision to declare 2011 the "European Year of Volunteering" is not surprising. The article closes highlighting some of the critical aspects and risks of the hoped-for relationship between the world of volunteering and European institutions.
