[Autom. eng. transl.] The sector of congresses and events represents a relevant area within business tourism and can offer a significant contribution to the development of local economies. At the international level the benefits generated in the territory by congresses and events have been identified by existing research, first of all, in economic terms and quantified through the typical indicators of the tourism sector and the amount of expenditure incurred by participants and organizers in the days of event and in the days preceding and / or following; secondly, more recently, the studies have focused on the study of the benefits that the congress sector exerts in favor of the degree of innovation and technological development of the host territory. In order to analyze the main features of the congress and event market in Italy, Federcongressi & eventi promoted the Italian Observatory of Congresses and Events in 2014, a research project carried out by the High School of Economics and International Relations (ASERI) of the Catholic University. The contribution illustrates the data concerning all meetings lasting at least 4 hours with a minimum of 10 participants, which took place in 2017 in venues for congresses and events of all types, actively operating on the market throughout the Italian territory and whose structural features are known.
