Abstract

It is a brief summary of the development of the religious devotion built on the figure of Mary, with particular reference to the Italian contest. The realistic way of the affective investment on the concrete corporal beauty of the Virgin has promoted a wider rising movement that seems to have known a sharp increase, beginning with the end of the Middle Age, linking to the pastoral strategies of the Church: these, starting from the leading power of the Papacy, have been connected with the seeking of protections needed by the whole Christian people.
