[Autom. eng. transl.] The strength of terrorism lies, above all, in words: its name already evokes the fear that is the goal of every form of terrorism. The start of the Millennium, then, the terrorism of the Islamic State, of Daesh, has from the very beginning known how to masterfully use communication as a combat tool in the new form of conflict that finds its definition in the Hybrid War. That third world war, fought at "spizzichi e bocconi", as effectively described first by Pope Francis: never as today the world is troubled by a number of conflicts, which find in civilians the number of victims, geographically independent but all between related to them. It can be said that this is also the common feeling, which leads to seek answers to questions such as: what is the terrorism of the new millennium? How has terrorism changed and how can it have so many proselytes? How can terrorism be fought? Can you live with these daily threats? The questions are natural and legitimate. But the answers are, at least, complicated. Yet our ability to respond and continue to live depends on the answers we will be able to give. The short volume proposed here addresses these questions trying to provide the elements that foster the awareness needed to face a threat that is part of modernity and that is destined to continue in the near future. The arguments concern the definition of terrorism, emphasizing that there is no shared definition of the phenomenon and, therefore, a cohesive response to terrorism is difficult because the consequent regulatory instruments to combat it are lacking. We continue by emphasizing the discontinuity of the objectives and practices of this terrorism, compared to that of the past seasons, from which the uncertainty in understanding it and in elaborating the operational responses, which are reflected in the poor effectiveness of the contrast policies. The specificity of the Islamic State is faced, the threat of the present, with attention to its ability to develop innovative strategies on the multiple fronts of the Hybrid War and its paradoxical "utility" to the maintenance of a surpassed geo-political balance. It concludes by proposing a possible scenario based on the challenges that terrorism poses to Europe and Italy: the lines that can guide us in answering the questions we started with.
