Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Cistercian abbot and monastic reformer, Gioacchino da Fiore is the apocalyptic who most influenced the prophetic and millenarian trends and movements of the medieval West. In this intellectual biography the whole of his doctrinal production is considered in close correlation with the political-ecclesiastical events of the last quarter of the twelfth century. Theologian worried about the fate of the Roman Church in its relations with the Empire and the crumbling of Christianity under the pressure of heretics and Muslims, Gioacchino reads the current phase as the final chapter in history, marked by the imminent advent of the "Son of Perdition "and the subsequent third status of the Spirit. The changes that it gradually gives to its historical and eschatological conceptions are understood taking into account the changing of contingencies and its perception of them
