Abstract
The essay shows how the telescope, in Galileo's hands, became a scientific instrument that, for the first time, moved the optical horizon beyond the ordinary limits of visibility. And it emphasizes how Galileoss extraordinary astronomical discoveries, in revealing a "new heaven," aroused enthusiasm and admiration, but also, is the case with the poet John Donne, dismay and apprehension.
