Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The linguistic skills related to arithmetic operations, the ability to count and "to do calculation", have always been considered a fundamental component of the so-called inner or endophasic language. And in fact in research related to the phenomenon of bilingualism such skills are included among the linguistic components that allow to determine the dominant language of bilingual subjects. If we start from the assumption that to perform mathematical operations the subject - even bilingual - always and only uses the dominant language, the mother tongue or L1, we exclude the possibility that the acquisition of the terminology and the lexical formulas necessary to name the mathematical operations and to verbalize the processes it may be of some use in the educational field, except of course for language courses aimed at specialists in a particular sector in which mathematical terminology should be fundamental. What practical utility can the acquisition of mathematical terminology have if the learner will never be required and if in any case he will never use it because this terminology is part of the use of internal language or internal functions and he will always only use the mother tongue? In the light of the hypotheses advanced by the proponents of didactic approaches focused on the use and memorization of complex lexical constructions and fixed formulas, the so-called chunks, in the context of the Lexical Approach, the answer to the question offers new perspectives since, like chunks and of the fixed constructions of the common language, also in the fixed constructions of the language of specialty of the arithmetic one can see useful didactic tools.
