Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The presence of women in economic activity and in particular in business is the subject of studies that have grown in recent decades: after the first analyzes aimed at measuring female participation rates in business management, the motivations that lead women to become female entrepreneurs and the peculiarities of female enterprises, applied research and studies have become widespread in order to assess the differences in the business performance of companies on the basis of gender, with results that are still not converging. To date, however, the link between women's economy and entrepreneurship and development, particularly at the local level, remains unexplored. In the chapter, after a review of the literature that has analyzed female enterprises and their comparative performances and the link between the women's economy and development, the Italian reality is analyzed, the spread of women's enterprises in the regions and provinces in Italy, to then verify some relationships with different indicators of local development.
