Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The risk of re-optimization in cases of domestic violence is high. One of the most important predictors of recurrence of violence is reconciliation with the partner. The objective of this study was to examine whether and to what extent some variables such as the degree of relational dependence on the partner, the forgiveness granted to the partner and the feelings of hope for change of the partner, could explain the decision for the woman to risk reconciling with the partner, after an attempt at separation. The study was conducted with a sample of 62 women victims of domestic violence contacted through hospital or anti-violence centers in different parts of Italy. Each woman was given a questionnaire that included the variables of interest in the study. The analysis of the results showed that relational dependence was indirectly associated with higher intentions of returning together with the partner through the positive dimension of forgiveness - that is, the benevolent dimension - and the hope of a partner's change. The positive dimension of forgiveness (benevolence) in this specific relational phase, could represent a phase of the cycle of violence, during which the hope of a change in man, together with the belief that "he has learned his lesson", can develop and increase the probability of reconciliation. These results have significant implications both at a theoretical and practical level, as they highlight some risk factors associated with potentially dangerous but frequent behavior among women victims of domestic violence, or the willingness to give the ex-partner another chance.
