Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume traces a linguistic and stylistic history of the Italian nineteenth century novel, from Foscolo to D'Annunzio, with a preliminary reference to the eighteenth century. In the first part the fundamental lines of the evolution of the genus are expounded, favoring the deepening of authors and works that have constituted significant stages in the bumpy journey towards a language suitable for modern narrative. In the second part of the book thirteen passages from some of the novels considered in the first section are anthologized. Each step is accompanied by explanatory notes and a preliminary comment that reflect the interpretative lines already exposed enriching them with new annotations of a historical, literary and linguistic nature. The volume is accompanied by an index of names and by another of the linguistic and rhetorical phenomena mentioned in the text.
