Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] With reference to the theme of the enigmatic word, 'mysterious' aspects concerning the missionaries in China are dealt with. The figure of Matteo Ricci SJ, the first missionary to settle in Beijing, was enigmatic for the Chinese, because it was not understandable what role he played in society and what his activity was. Furthermore, Matteo Ricci's use of some famous phrases from the classics to insert them in the booklet aimed at memorizing Chinese characters is also enigmatic.
