Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Over the last thirty years, International Relations have had to face two unexpected and (perhaps) unpredictable events, which have changed the theoretical and methodological horizon of the most consolidated dominant traditions within the discipline. The revival of post-positivist approaches and the return of religion have in fact challenged the most granitic assumptions (or, to put it another way, prejudices) of many scholars who had voluntarily eliminated the sacred and the non-positive from their research agenda. If the longest wave of the crisis has invested above all in neorealism, these innovations seem instead to give new relevance to classical realism. In particular, it is Reinhold Niebuhr's reflection to take on a new importance in the context of a discipline in constant (albeit slow) ferment. The "Christian realism" of the Protestant theologian - both because of his firm opposition to scientific reductionism and because of the genetic openness to the transcendental dimension of human experience - appears to be a contribution to be rediscovered in international studies. In an age now - though not completely - post-positivist and post-secular, in fact, Niebuhr's "Christian realism" can offer a useful tool for analyzing the rapid dynamics of change in the global system.
