Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The relations of the couple bishops / monasteries have always been characterized by critical issues. In the 4th / 5th century the tendency to bishop intrusion into the coenobitic world grew, especially in the Franco area, while in the Italian environment the weakness of the episcopal class was reflected in the almost total absence of references to the bishops in the rule of Benedict and in the early exemption granted to Bobbio . The advent of the Pipinids in the Frankish kingdom led to support the monastic environment, however in the full Carolingian age the episcopal initiative was decisive in favoring reform processes that strengthened its ability to control the monasteries, which grew in the western regions of the empire in parallel with the weakening of the royal power, leading to the worsening of the competition between bishops and monasteries which opened spaces to papal interference. In the eastern and Italian sectors, the strongest royal power chose instead to support episcopal authority, which here itself became the promoter of vast interventions of reform of the monastic institutions.
