Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The Radd al-īamīl li-ilāhiyyat 'Isà bi-ṣarīḥ al-Inǧīl (The beautiful refutation of the divinity of Jesus based on the explanation of the Gospel), traditionally attributed to Abū Ḥāmid al-Ġazālī, is a text that fits into the rich vein of classical vintage Islamic-Christian controversy literature. The present volume, in addition to offering the Italian translation, studies in depth the thorny question of the authorship of the work and explores its contents in depth, trying to find its sources. The author, probably an ex-Coptic who converted to Islam, analyzes the Christian Scriptures in order to refute the divinity of Christ but, unlike other polemicists, he does not focus so much on the passages that emphasize the humanity of Jesus, but on those passages that highlight its divinity and that constitute the very pivot of Christology, such as those taken from the Gospel of John, trying to give them a metaphorical meaning compatible with Islam. Beyond the results of this exegesis, the interest of the text lies in the profound effort made by the author to give an Islamic sense to the Gospels and to reconcile in himself the Christian heritage and the Islamic religion.
