Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The entire pictorial cycle of the basilica of San Vincenzo seems to have, for technique and compositional choices, a unitary layout; the stylistic differences between the apse and the nave are due solely to the presence of various workers and the voluntary choice of a hieratic language for the apse theophany and a narrative for the scenes of the nave, both completed within or immediately after 1007. This hypothesis inevitably leads to giving a unified iconographic interpretation, so far never proposed, to the cycle that develops between the apse and nave. What emerges is a complete story with a strong saving message, a catechesis that, passing through all biblical times, from the origins of man to the eschatological dimension, proposes martyrdom and the figure of the martyr as miles Christi as a strong thematic nucleus. The complexity of the iconographic layout and the innovations introduced are evidence of a commission of profound religious sensitivity and high cultural preparation, characteristics that are well suited to the young Ariberto.
