Abstract
Promoting the learning and use of other languages constitutes an advanced language policy model and an important institutional and educational paradigm. The contribution illustrates the reasons for multilingualism in secondary and higher education, following the principal outcomes of some European projects (i.e. MIME, MAGICC). The demands of specialist and academic communication so as internationalisation and knowledge transfer highlight the interest in multilingual competencies. Multilingualism is a winning choice but also an ancient educational resource, a cultural opportunity for all, in different personal and professional situations, as well as a challenge that opens up to mutual exchanges, solidarity and inclusive dialogue.
