Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume reconstructs for the first time the diffusion of Pinocchio in the world and the international ‘fortune’ that the story of the puppet and its protagonist have had, from the publication in volume (1883) to today. From the European Pinocchio to the Asian one, from the ‘black’ puppet of many translations in African languages to the character that moves between North America, Latin America and Oceania, the Atlas traces the history and geography of a literary text that has known (and continues to know) no borders, between translations faithful to the original, adapted versions, rewritings, reductions. The figure of Pinocchio is also famous in the Arab world. Thanks to translations, Carlo Collodi’s character has also become well-rooted in Arab culture, embodying the liar par excellence. In this contribution we will try to retrace the path of Pinocchio from 1946 – the year of the first Arabic version of the work – to today, providing a map of the translations and some notes on his presence in the culture of Arab countries.
