Abstract

The papers collected in the volume were initially presented at the annual seminar of the Italian Society for History of ancient Philosophy (SISFA) in January 2021 and then revised by the authors for publication. The main question they raise is that of the cognitive nature of emotions, affections and passions. The question is discussed in connection with the philosophical role of "eros" (Cornelli) and the problem of public education (Gastaldi) in Plato; as Aristotle is concerned, Natali-Viano show the cognitive nature of passions in the "Rhetoric" and Mingucci studies the case of anger between human beings and animals; a final view is devoted to Aritotle's reception in the Pythagorean ethics by Arisotexenus (Ianne).
