Abstract

The contribution dwells on Pope Paul VI's position towards contemporary art, in particular in relation to the timid openings of the Second Vatican Council. Among the most debated and probably still unresolved issues that emerged during the Council and post-Council reflections, there is that of the distinction between religious and sacred art and above all the degree of freedom of the artist when confronted with the liturgy. Through the analysis of the main Council and post-Council texts and the interventions of Paul VI, the essay highlights the Pope's position towards contemporary art, both in relation to the liturgy and in the wider context of religious art.
