Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] In the first chapter of 'A novel in steam', Collodi quotes some famous sayings to represent as many ways of understanding life and intellectual activity. Apparently, he wants to refute Buffon's statement "le style est l'homme même" in favor of Benjamin Franklin's "Time is money" motto. In reality, it tends to mediate between the two judgments and to establish a communication channel with a broad audience, enhancing expressive resources such as the proverbial one, which combines brevity, sententiousness and versatility of use. The article aims to reconstruct the main literary references referred to by Collodi, putting forward some interpretative hypotheses on the saying "the motto is man".
