Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] This volume tells the story of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena from the 1929 crisis to the banking reform of the early nineties. Using largely unpublished sources, the authors examine for the first time the events of a bank that, taken in 1936 as a public law credit institution, transforms its business model in the face of the processes of change that have crossed our country and scale the ranking of the main credit institutions in the world. The main corporate strategies, the characteristics of the operational model and the economic trend of the Monte are described here, since the crisis of the thirties, when it constitutes an anchor of stability for the banking system of central Italy, to the tumultuous 1940s, in which is engaged in financing the war and reconstruction; from the slow but continuous successes achieved during the "economic miracle" to the new crisis of the seventies, which sees the Sienese bank consolidate its positions, expanding its support for the "third Italy" of the industrial districts; from the rapid expansion of the eighties, with the construction of an increasingly broad and diversified banking group, to the tormented transformation into a joint-stock company. It is therefore an analysis that highlights the strengths and adaptability shown by Monte dei Paschi, but also its limitations and constraints in the face of challenges coming from an increasingly global and deregulated external context.
