Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The research takes as a case study the Baroque Brescia: a scenario that combines the excessive light of waste with the darkness of the plague, wars and dramatic social disparities. The book proposes, through an original methodological approach, a journey into the womb of urban society, exposing its physiology, starting from relations and financial hierarchies, to arrive at the modalities of access to local rights and resources. Against this background, two interconnected themes stand out: on the one hand, the social and political potential of credit relationships are highlighted, on the other the role of pious places. The interlocution between the inhabitants of the city and the main brotherhood of the city is not limited to the question of assistance, but orientates the paths and the prosopographies of the social actors. The speech is wedged into the ordinary exceptionality of an anonymous family of artisans who, thanks to an intensive documentary reconstruction, reveals the multiple faces of the uncertainty that the inhabitants of the ancient city face daily. From this universe of practices emerges an articulated accounting model, within which the transactions - from the opening of a credit to the creation of a life annuity - respond to a plurality of economic, social, political and ritual objectives, often linked and calculated to the inside a pragmatic strategy.
