Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Federcongressi&eventi – a non-profit organization that represents public and private operators carrying out activities connected with the congress and events sector – promoted in 2014 the Italian Congress and Events Observatory, a research project carried out by ASERI- High School of Economics and International Relations of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. The aim of the research project is the continuous monitoring of all types of events organized in Italy (congresses of associations, conventions, incentives, product launches and various meetings promoted by companies, organizations and institutions of all kinds), in order to provide accurate description of the size, characteristics and trends of the sector, which can help to direct appropriate strategies and investments. During 2021, of the 5,456 offices that were operating in Italy in 2020, 5.6% ceased their activity, 1.6% remained closed for restructuring and 0.3% was closed due to change of management or because for sale. Also considering the new venues added to the database, in 2021 the reference universe predicted 5,443 venues for congresses and events. Based on the answers provided by the 635 offices that joined the survey at the beginning of 2022 and thanks to the monitoring conducted by ASERI at the end of 2021, it was possible to estimate that 47.5% of the Italian offices, despite being open, did not host any events . The research showed that in 2021 in Italy a total of 86,438 events were held in person or in hybrid format with a minimum of 10 participants each and lasting a minimum of 4 hours (+23.7% compared to 2020 and -80% compared to 2020). 2019) (fig. 1), for a total of 4,585,433 participants (+14.7% compared to 2020 and -84.2% compared to 2019) - on average 53 people per event - and 6,798,425 attendance (+16 .3% compared to 2020 and -84.3% compared to 2019). The average duration of the events was 1.34 days, similar to that of 2020 (1.36) and slightly lower than the value recorded in 2019 (1.42).
