Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The Polibian lexicon of the political opposition is partly traditional, partly innovative; but above all, it is applied only to the contexts of internal politics, to privilege those of diplomacy and international politics; moreover, those that develop within the royal courts are combined with the internal contrasts within the Greek city and federation assemblies. This evidently depends on the different conditions of the Hellenistic period, in which international relations constitute the prevailing theme of the political clash, the embassies are the main occasion of rhetorical agone and the court is approached, and replacing itself, to the assembly of the autonomous state, citizen or federal, as the seat of political confrontation.
