Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay proposes a theoretical reflection on the "place" and the meaning of work in industrial society. It analyzes the factors that contributed to making standard wage labor a social institution during the twentieth century and its functionality within the framework of the so-called "mid-century compromise". Finally, he reflects on the implications that derive from the de-standardization of work started with post-Fordism and from the new challenges emerging with the fourth industrial revolution, to rediscover the legacies that the twentieth century left as a dowry to the contemporary world.
