Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The contribution analyzes the historical evolution of relations between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China during the pontificates of John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis, highlighting both the features of continuity and the innovations introduced by each pontiff. In particular, the reasons for the strong discontinuity in the choices of the Holy See, which can be placed in 2009, and the substantial continuity in the positions of the three popes considered towards Chinese Catholics are investigated in a historical and global geo-political perspective.
