Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] How to assess the role of digital media in relation to the exercise of citizenship? What kind of link exists between the forms of cultural production that make use of the participatory platforms of the web and the capacity for action and decision of the citizens? Is it possible to observe on the internet a dynamic of democratization not only through the media but also within the media? These are some of the questions raised by the new media milieu, made even more pressing by the increasingly frequent narratives on the crisis of western democracies and the growing depletion of popular sovereignty. Through a critique of the normative ideal of deliberative public sphere, the volume intends to demonstrate how the intertwining of democracy and the web can be understood thanks to a cultural approach to the public sphere, within which every communicative act is traced back to the civic culture from which it arises and that helps to shape. The possibilities of participation trace a new regulatory horizon with which to evaluate from time to time the democratic promises of the internet in their concrete manifestations.
