Abstract
For the purposes of the ethical declension of jurisprudence, according to the teaching of Augustine Gemelli, the Roman jurists can be 'masters' for us: this is certainly not because theirs was a just society - as the very existence of slavery shows - but for a reason of method. They did indeed succeed, at least in the civil sphere, in their intention to develop the ius by adhering to the "compass" of the fundamental values of the society to which they belonged - bona fides, aequitas, humanitas, etc. - and they did this in the concrete activity of their respondent, making these values central elements of the technical solutions to the cases that came to their attention from time to time.
