Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] McCarthyism made its effects felt even in Italy. The debate was broad, harsh and involved political parties, pressure groups, trade unions, the Catholic Church, and cultural circles. There were also clashes between citizens, who, at least in one case, ended up stabbed. The cold war divided society into a country that had the strongest communist party in the West and often the division ran within the same families and broke old friendships. The Italian press played a prominent role in making the story of an America known by dealing with its "red ghost", but above all by using what was taking place on the other side of the Atlantic for internal political controversy. The book analyzes a significant sample of Italian journalism to study, from this particular angle of view, how each piece of news was used for the purposes of political struggle, focusing in particular on two emblematic cases of the McCarthy climate, the Chaplin case and the dramatic story of the spouses Rosenberg.
