Abstract
PhD is the most advanced educational segment and, despite the criticalities due to the profound transformations of the world of work and Higher Education, involves a significant number of young people. The length and complexity of the path on one hand, the lack of absorption by the university compartment on the other, make the PhD worthy of attention also in the perspective of the vocational guidance of young people to work. In our country, reflection on this training segment has often focused on the technical characteristics and the articulation of the pathways, also considering the stresses of national and supranational organizations, while in international literature attention is also given to the doctorate as a path of development and identity growth as well as professional (Green 2005), by embracing its truly educational dimension.
In a pedagogical perspective, the PhD can be understood as part of an individual's professional development project and, as such, needs to be deliberately planned.
Such a survey perspective suggests that a doctoral degree should also be oriented. Often, the motivations and expectations of doctoral students are unsuccessful and there could be difficulty carrying on the course and / or at the time of its conclusion. By analogy with what is happening in the other training segments, accompaniment to a conscious choice can thus be the first determinant of success.
