Abstract

The paper analyzes the still controversial problem of the Mandragola’s composition date. It reconsiders Sergio Bertelli’s and Mario Martelli’s conjecture of a first write of the comedy in 1504, testified by its prologue which in reality should be composed by two different prologues, each related to a different drafting. To these hypothesis the paper adds new informations, particularly related to scenic conventions at the very beginning of XVI century, and underlines how the prologue last five stanzas should be dated around 1504 because they are indifferent to any scenic location, while the first three, which ironically allude to perspective city scene, should be written for a later performance, around 1518 or 1520
