Abstract
This paper focuses on the main kinds of reported speech. It highlights their semantic and syntactic features and discuss some of the fundamental differences between (free) direct and (free) indirect speech, with particular reference to deixis and code semiosis (introductory verbs and phrases, verb morphology and syntax, deictic centers and verbal deixis).
